BEST BUDGET HOTELS IN TOKYO, JAPAN

Updated: Aug 30

Finding a hotel in Tokyo, Japan can easily be overwhelming. There are so many choices and different places to stay. If you are on a budget for your trip to Tokyo this post is for you. This will save you hours in research and I've only selected the best and most highly rated hotels.

Finding the best budget hotels in Tokyo - that stay affordable even during peak seasons (i.e. cherry blossom season) is not a simple task. To make it easier to find one for your budget, I've broken down the hotels into under €100per night (remember, this price is even during peak seasons) and under €150per night.

The selected hotels are spread out across the city of Tokyo and range from your modern high-rise hotels to guesthouses stays, and even the more traditional Japanese ryokans. Select from the drop-down menu below for even more information on where you should stay and how you might get there.

WHAT AREA SHOULD I STAY IN:

Tokyo is divided up into 22 district regions (see image below) which helps break down this large city. Below I'm going to quickly highlight some of the more popular areas to stay in these regions when people visit Tokyo BUT of course, you may actually enjoy other regions I haven't highlight. Tokyo is full of places waiting to be explored. Most the ones I will highlight are popular to stay in due to being close to a rail station or close to popular tourist attractions.

Shinjuku (Shinjuku-Ku)

One of the most popular places to stay in Tokyo due to the train station on the JR Line, and the vibrant nightlife. A mix of all prices ranges for hotels; the more budget friendly ones do sell out quick, however. Tip 1: If you only have time for a day trip to Mt Fuji, Shinjuku has the best connections to get there.

Tip 2: For 1st timers to Tokyo, just be aware that having Shinjuku Station as your main train station can be an overwhelming experience due to its size (same as Tokyo Station).

Shibuya (Shibuya-Ku)

Shibuya is also quite popular as it's located in close proximity to many iconic attractions (like Shibuya crossing), is still on the JR Line and also has a bustling atmosphere. Good budget hotels are a lot harder to find in Shibuya with many of the hotels in the mid-high range.

Akasaka (Minato-Ku)

Not a as well-known place to stay but Akasaka is centrally located and is close by to 2 train lines. There are lots of good restaurants as well as nightlife still to be enjoyed just without the craziness of say Shinjuku. Hotels are available in all price ranges.

Ginza (Chuo-Ku)

Ginza is known as a more up market place to stay with luxury shopping stores and many 5 star hotels. Several stations are within walking distance - the largest being Tokyo station. Can be harder to find well rated budget options in Ginza.

Tokyo Station (Chiyoda-Ku)

Tokyo station is located quite close to Ginza and similarly is good for nice restaurants, shops and train connection to many locations. Not as lively as Shibuya/Shinjuku area if you are after nightlife. Tip: For 1st timers to Tokyo, having Tokyo Station as your main train station can be an overwhelming experience due to its size (same as Shinjuku Station).

Asakusa (Taito-Ku)

Asakusa is a popular tourist spot in Tokyo as it showcases the more historic and traditional side of Japan. For example, in Asakusa is Senso-ji temple, the oldest temple in the city. Nakamise Street leads up to the temple - a shopping strip lined with traditional arts and crafts. Accommodation in Asakusa is super budget friendly and is known as a more affordable area to stay in.

Akihabara (Chiyoda-Ku)

Akihabara is THE place to stay for those who love Japanese tech, video games, manga and animae. This area has thousands of shops selling the stuff. Akihabara also has many great food and entertainment options but not huge on nightlife. Hotels are available in all budget ranges.

Ueno (Taito-Ku)

One of the main drawcards for Ueno is Ueno Station. A main train station that offers many connections to other parts of the city. The food scene here is also highly recommended as well as also being known for a great range of accommodation options that suit all types of travelers. Alot of the hotels in Ueno are in the budget to mid-priced range.

GETTING AROUND TOKYO:

QUICK OVERVIEW FOR BEGINNERS: Below is a basic map of the common train lines in Tokyo that travelers use. My suggestion would be to work out your activities, pin them onto a map, and see where you will be spending most of your time. The other major factor in choosing where to stay (for me personally) is after a long day in Tokyo, where would you like to spend your nights. In an area with good food? nightlife? quiet? safe? or close by to attractions you can visit at night?

Tip: The JR Line is the green circle in the image. This is the most commonly recommended line to stay close to for best access to the majority of tourist places. TRAIN TICKETS: The best way is to purchase a rechargeable card like Suica & PASMO. These can be topped up at the automated ticket machines in the train stations. The Suica cards are available to purchase at most JR stations/major Tokyo airports, and the Pasmo cards at non-JR Stations (the privately run railway/subway stations) or again, major Tokyo airports. They will work for both lines, however. DAY PASSES: If there are days where you are travelling a lot, day passes are available which can be purchased. These passes give you unlimited rides over a timeframe. SHINKANSEN: Reservations for the Shinkansen will need to be booked separately. This is Japan's iconic bullet train that connects you to other parts of Japan.
